one direction merchandise

Music is being consumed in all manor of ways, from set streams to podcasts, radio broadcasts and everything in between. New technology allows users to have unlimited access to their favourite artists 24 hours a day and the sonic rhythms are endless. So what does music festival brand identity and merchandise add to the overall festival goer experience?

As festival season approaches, Pep Merch takes a look at some of the best music festival branding design. Who is selling out their festival merchandise and what commercial brands do they have relationships with? What music festival is in your top ten? Why not leave us a comment.

From Glastonbury to Primavera Sound, let’s have a look at some of Pep Merch favourites.

Barcelona Beach Festival: 15th July 2017, Platja del Fòrum i Parc de la Pau, Barcelona

The Barcelona Beach festival attracts around a whopping 40,000 EDM festival goes from around the globe, descending on Barcelona for a weekend of sun, fun and raving. BBF is one of the biggest EDM festivals in Europe and pull in big names such as Hardwell, Armin Van Buuren, Kittens, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. We worked with them last year so perhaps somewhat a little bias, we think this industrial t-shirt and logo design has a clear brand identity. We also give them a high-five for producing their t-shirts in both male and female cuts.

BILBAO BBK Live: 6-8 July 2017, Bilbao, Spain

A very clever marketing incentive by BILBAO BBK LIVE to offer a limited edition ‘merchandise box’ full of festival goodies including official BILBAO BBK LIVE sweatshirt, cup, lanyard, slipmats, sunglasses and a discount ticket for the following year – genius! All the official merchandise is designed by artist, graphic designer and illustrator Ricardo Cavolo. Tweet at @MissPersChopped for more info about this fab Christmas gift.

Nos Primavera Sound: 8-10 June 2107, Porto, Portugal

We love this illustration and design by Barcelona based design company Desisto. This was the official merchandise t-shirt for NOS Primavera Sound festival 2015, a collaboration between the official Primavera Sound merchandise and NOS Primavera Sound.

Glastonbury: 21-25th June 2017, Glastonbury, England

Around 175,000 people attend the 5-day arts and music event every year. Famous for mud baths and it’s fair share of rain (welly’s at the ready), Glastonbury is still one of the biggest cultural events on the festival circuit. Originated by a farmer agreeing to allow people to use his land to listen to a bit of music back in 1970, subsequently it also had a big part in starting the DIY free party movement back in the early 90’s. So therefore, we can forgive the fact there has never been any need for decent merchandising as the festival really speaks for itself. It’s bright colours and authentic ‘event T’ design says it all.

The Best Of Pep Merch 2016

Pep Merch 1600x404

Bowie, Maurice White, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, Rick Parfit – perhaps one of the saddest musical endings to a year, ever. A LOT happened in 2016; while personalised merchandise made the Top Retail Trends 2016, days of the one-size-fits-all and Fruit Of The Loom sweatshirts were put well and truly put out of site. Pep Merch pulled in a healthy roster of tours and festivals to warrant this ‘Best Of Pep’ 2016.

1. Il Volo
il volo 2015
We kicked off summer 2016 by taking Il Volo merchandise around Europe, going through Madrid, Brussels, Luxemburg, Paris, London, Moscow St Petersburg and Frankfurt, finishing off the final leg of the tour in Vienna. The fans were amazing, and we saw some very happy faces in the VIP Meet n Great session, also a few tears.

2. Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney one on one
In June we joined The Macca One on One 2016 European Tour. Paul MacCartney spent 6 weeks doing the rounds in Stadiums around Europe including an amazing show in the Atletico Madrid Vicente Calderon football stadium. Only 40 items of merchandise to choose from on that tour, cheers Macca!

3. Barcelona Beach Festival
Barcelona Beach Festival
Our biggest one day event and largest production line was the 40,000 strong electronic music event Barcelona Beach Festival; 24 hours featuring the biggest EDM artists from around the world including David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren and Hardwell. Non stop dance music on the beach, cant complain about that one, we’ll need some suntan cream this year.

4. Neox Rocks Festival
NEOX ROCKS Festival 2016
A two day indie-pop festival in the outskirts of Madrid gave us a some fun on a very sunny September weekend in a very dusty arena. Hanging out with the crazy Izal fans was an experience.

5. LA Festival
LA Festival 2016
Another indie festival this time in Murcia, a big “saludo” to the guys in Sidonie. This time we got to hang out with the local Mayor, what a nice guy.

6. Laura Pausini
laura pausini vip
We produced the VIP merchandise for Laura’s European Simili Tour, in collaboration with our friends over the pond in West Hollywood, OMG VIP. We’ll be working very closely with them again this year.

6. The Chemical Brothers

Hey girl, hey boy, superstar DJs, here we go! In October Pep Merch went back out on the road with the Chemical Brothers. Kicking off in Barcelona through Madrid, Bilbao and back over to the West coast in Santiago Compostela. A mad week clocking up nearly 3000 kilometers in 5 days. It’s been a while since we’ve done that, excellent preparation for the year to come.

7. Crystal Fighters
Crystal Fighters Tour Photo
One of the highlights and most fun tours of the year was with the Crystal Fighters. Sold out shows in Lisbon, La Coruña, San Sebastian, Barcelona, Granada, Valencia and a bang off end of tour show in The Barclaycard Center in Madrid, balloons and confetti overload. Our new found friends certainly know how to pull a crowd AND a party. Big shout out to Bas, Graham, Gilbert, Louise, Ellie and Bing. See you all soon.

All this and helping out Arcade Fire in their Barcelona Razzmatazz show and producing some product for the Leyendas del Rock Festival this summer rounded off an interesting and productive year.

Bring on 2017.
